16 Days Awareness Campaign on Gender-Based Violence Extends to Uttarey; Focus on New Criminal Laws

​UTTAREY, GYALSHING, December 4, 2025 – Continuing the momentum of the movement against gender-based violence, a comprehensive sensitization programme titled ‘16 DAYS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO ELIMINATE GENDER BASED VIOLENCE’ was held today at the Titanic Park, Uttarey, Gyalshing District.

​The event brought together law enforcement, administrative experts, and community members to discuss women's safety, legal rights, and the support systems available under the State and Central Government.

​A key highlight of today’s programme was the inclusion of law enforcement perspectives regarding the newly implemented criminal laws in India.

The session featured a robust lineup of resource persons who covered the following critical areas:

​Mr. Shekhar Basnett, Station House Officer (SHO), Uttarey, provided a crucial briefing on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new penal code replacing the IPC. He educated the gathering on the legal provisions specifically designed to protect women and the procedural changes in reporting and addressing crimes under the new legal framework.

​Mr. Rojan Pradhan, State Mission Coordinator, SHEW, elaborated on the various schemes under Mission Shakti and the operational details of the Women Helpline 181, emphasizing its role as a primary emergency response system.

​Mrs. Chimi Bhutia, Central Administrator, OSC cum Protection Officer, conducted a session on the Domestic Violence Act, explaining the rights of victims and the comprehensive assistance provided by the One Stop Centre (OSC) for medical, legal, and psychological support.

​Mr. Stephen Rai, Research and Training Specialist, SHEW cum SHe Box Operator, spoke on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act, detailing the mechanisms for complaints in workplaces and the usage of the SHe Box Portal for registering grievances.

​In addition to the technical sessions, a Sticker Campaign was organized at the venue. Women Helpline (WHL) stickers and posters were widely distributed to Self-Help Groups (SHGs), local taxi drivers, and the general public to ensuring that emergency contact numbers are visible and accessible throughout the Uttarey region.

​The programme concluded with a call to action for the community to remain vigilant and supportive in the collective fight to eliminate violence against women.
