The Department of Science & Technology, Government of Sikkim, organised a three-day technical training programme on “Electrical Resistivity Data Processing and Modelling” from 4th to 6th November 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, Deorali, Gangtok.
The training programme was aimed at strengthening the technical capabilities of scientific and technical personnel in the application of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) for subsurface investigations, geological studies and disaster risk assessment, particularly in the fragile Himalayan environment.
The programme covered the fundamentals of geophysical methods and electrical resistivity techniques, ERT survey design, field data acquisition, data quality assessment, pre-processing, forward and inverse modelling, and interpretation of resistivity datasets. Special emphasis was given to practical learning through hands-on software sessions, field demonstrations and case studies.
Participants received practical exposure to ERT survey procedures, including electrode installation, field data collection, data processing and interpretation. Case studies highlighting the application of ERT in glacial lake investigations, moraine characterization, landslide studies and other geological assessments were also discussed.
The Department expressed its appreciation to the Resource Person, Dr. Gautam Rawat, Scientist ‘F’, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Uttarakhand for sharing valuable technical expertise and to all participating officers from State Government departments, research scholars from Sikkim University, technical personnel from G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) - Sikkim Regional Centre and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology for their active involvement. The programme concluded with an emphasis on strengthening institutional technical capacity and promoting the application of advanced scientific tools for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development in the State
