As per the direction of District Collector, Gangtok, Shri Rohan Ramesh Agawne, IAS, a joint inspection was conducted on 15 July 2026 at 7th Mile, 51-Kyongnosla GPU, Gangtok, to assess the extent of damage caused by continuous heavy rainfall. The inspection was attended by the Hon’ble OSD to the MLA, Kabi-Lungshok Constituency, Shri Lazong Bhutia; Honorable Zilla Panchayat member, Hon’ble Councillor, Bhojoghari, Shri Ongden Bhutia; Joint Director, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok District, Shri Sonam Wongyal Lepcha; Head Surveyor, Shri Sherap Bhutia; along with local residents.
During the inspection, the team observed that an approximately 200-metre stretch of road had been completely washed away, rendering it impassable and severely disrupting vehicular movement in the area. The damage has significantly affected connectivity and caused considerable inconvenience to the local population.
The inspection further revealed that several residential houses have developed structural cracks ranging from minor to severe, while one house has completely collapsed. Several other houses have sustained major cracks, raising serious concerns regarding the safety of their occupants. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The team also observed that the local monastery and temple have suffered extensive structural damage and have been assessed as unsafe for conducting religious activities until further notice.
As a precautionary measure, the inspection team identified the Sikkim Shramik Bishram Griha, the only government building in the vicinity, as a temporary relief shelter. The facility will be utilized as a relief camp in the event of any emergency. Families residing in houses declared unsafe may be relocated to the shelter to ensure their safety until detailed assessments are completed and appropriate rehabilitation measures are undertaken.
The concerned departments have been requested to initiate immediate measures for the restoration of road connectivity, detailed assessment of damaged structures, and implementation of necessary mitigation and rehabilitation measures to safeguard the lives and property of the affected residents.
The District Administration continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring timely response, relief, and rehabilitation measures in the interest of public safety.
