Team Sikkim Concludes East Zone Junior Athletics Championships with Five Medals
GANGTOK: Team Sikkim concluded its campaign at the 37th East Zone Junior Athletics Championships 2026, held at the Patliputra Sports Complex, Kankarbagh, Patna, Bihar, from September 22 to 24, 2026, with an impressive haul of five medals, comprising two Gold and three Bronze medals.
Representing Sikkim under the aegis of the Sikkim Athletics Association (SAA), the young athletes put up a strong performance against competitors from across the East Zone, bringing home medals in the Under-20 category.
Phurba Hissey Sherpa emerged as one of the standout performers for Team Sikkim, securing the Gold medal in the Under-20 Men’s 1500m before adding a Bronze medal in the 3000m. His double-medal performance highlighted his versatility across the middle- and long-distance events.
Sabina Rai secured the second Gold medal for Sikkim by finishing first in the Under-20 Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, while Anchal Rai secured the Bronze medal in the same event.
In the Under-20 Women’s 1500m, Sapna Khanal produced a strong performance to claim the Bronze medal, taking Sikkim’s overall medal tally to five.
With these performances, Team Sikkim concluded the championship with two Gold and three Bronze medals, marking a strong campaign for the State’s junior athletics contingent.
The Sikkim Athletics Association congratulates the athletes, coaches and officials on the successful campaign and places on record its sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), for his continued encouragement and support for sports in the State, and to Ms. Yangchen D. Tamang, Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, for her support in facilitating the contingent’s participation in the championship.
