NEC Dedicates Infrastructure Milestones Worth 32.54 Crore to Sikkim: Blending Environmental Harmony, Urban Ease, and Educational Elevation
Shillong, August 2026: In Sikkim, where fragile mountain ecology demands thoughtful stewardship, the North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDONER), has brought three major transformative infrastructure projects to completion during July-August 2026. Totalling 32.54 crore, these finished initiatives reflect a harmonious union of public welfare, modern civic infrastructure, and environmental care, touching the lives of thousands nestled across the Himalayan state.
Guarding Vulnerable Slopes:
• Integrated Drainage at Lower Rangpo:
Where steep hills meet heavy monsoon torrents, water must be guided with care so life below can flourish. On 30 July 2026, the NEC marked the formal completion of the vital engineering project titled "Drainage Works for Community Assets under Integrated Development of Lower Rangpo, including the IBM area in East Sikkim". Completed at a final re-revised sanctioned cost of 816.66131 lakh (approximately 8.17 crore), the scheme evolved through rigorous technical oversight originally sanctioned at 778.44 lakh on 2 March 2022, revised to 818.97 lakh on 30 October 2023, and finalized on 30 July 2026.
Shielding Hamlets and Homes: Lower Rangpo rests in a low-lying zone naturally vulnerable to descending surface runoff and household wastewater. The systematically engineered drainage network channels these flows safely toward the river, curbing waterlogging, averting catastrophic landslides, and shielding community infrastructure as well as private homesteads.
Ecological and Public Health Safeguards: Benefiting more than 10,000 citizens, the project establishes planned surface runoff management. The line department is actively planning the systematic treatment of wastewater and surface runoff before its ultimate river discharge, fostering cleaner aquatic health and safeguarding local well-being.
• Creating Breathing Space
Underground Parking Facility at Namchi:
In the bustling mountain hub of Namchi, where narrow ridge roads often bow beneath vehicular strain, the NEC has carved out a modern urban solution. The Underground Parking Space Project at Namchi, sanctioned at 14.77 crore, has achieved 100% completion during this period.
Model Financial Discipline: Demonstrating meticulous execution, the entire sanctioned outlay of 14.77 crore was fully disbursed and effectively utilized, attaining complete operational readiness with zero cost overrun.
Unlocking Urban Mobility: By shifting parked vehicles safely underground, this civic asset plays a pivotal role in de-congesting Namchi Bazar, freeing streetscapes for pedestrian life, and restoring swift mobility across South Sikkim's commercial heart.
• Temples of Knowledge
Sikkim State University at Temi Tarku:
Education remains the quiet dawn of human progress. Marking another crowning achievement in regional institutional empowerment, the "Construction of Sikkim State University at Temi Tarku. South Sikkim" was completed and officially closed on 28 August 2026. Sanctioned under the Scheme of NEC (SoNEC) at 9.6196 crore, the project delivers modern academic spaces in the tranquil shadow of Sikkim's renowned tea gardens, equipping the youth of the state with higher educational opportunities close to home.
These tri-fold milestones reaffirm the NEC's enduring pledge to nurture the North Eastern Region through sustainable engineering, planned urban development, and accessible higher education. By weaving safety into slopes, space into towns, and knowledge into communities, the Council ensures that development walks hand-in-hand with Sikkim's pristine mountain heritage.
