Educational Visit of PM SHRI Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School to KVK South Sikkim

Namchi, 2 September : Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) South Sikkim, Namthang, organised an educational and exposure visit for students from PM SHRI Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School. The programme was aimed at providing students with practical exposure to agriculture and allied sciences and familiarising them with emerging opportunities in agriculture, entrepreneurship and related fields.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Shri Indra Prasad Shivakoti, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK South Sikkim. The visiting students and faculty were welcomed by the KVK team, who facilitated a series of informative and interactive sessions.

A key highlight of the programme was an informative session on Soil Health Management delivered by Shri Yograj Pradhan, Deputy Director (STL), Agriculture Department, Namchi District.

The students also attended a session by Dr. Obediah Rai, Senior Research Fellow, on the importance, future scope and career opportunities in Agriculture and Allied Sciences.

Ms. Ambika Sharma, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), KVK South Sikkim, conducted a session on vermicomposting, highlighting the importance of organic waste recycling and sustainable nutrient management.

Dr. Pravesh Shivakoty, Subject Matter Specialist, provided the participating students and farmers with theoretical knowledge on mushroom cultivation.

The programme also included hands-on exposure to mushroom cultivation, coordinated by Shri Tshering Dorjee Tamang, Farm Manager, KVK South Sikkim, enabling students to understand the basic aspects and entrepreneurial potential of mushroom production.

As part of the educational visit, the students were also taken to Crafted Fibers Studio at Nagi, coordinated by Dr. Chewang Norbu Bhutia, Subject Matter Specialist, KVK South Sikkim, where they received exposure to fibre-based activities and related entrepreneurial opportunities.

The programme was coordinated by Ms. Yangchenla Bhutia, Subject Matter Specialist, KVK South Sikkim, who also served as the Master of Ceremony.

The visit provided the students with an opportunity to connect classroom learning with practical experiences in soil health management, agriculture, allied sciences, vermicomposting, mushroom cultivation and rural entrepreneurship. The interactive nature of the programme encouraged students to develop greater interest in agriculture and explore its potential as a field of education, employment and enterprise.

In his closing remarks, Mr Tilak Pradhan, Faculty Member of PM SHRI Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School, expressed his gratitude to the Head of KVK South Sikkim, along with all the resource persons, for hosting such a knowledgeable and well-arranged programme for the students.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Ambika D. Bhattarai, KVK South Sikkim, expressing appreciation to all those who contributed towards the successful organisation of the educational visit
