Report on Second Phase of Cataract Eye Surgery Successfully conducted at Greater Lions Club Siliguri
Gangtok 6th Oct 2026: On 3rd Oct 2026,The Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Welfare Department, Gangtok District, under the Atul Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana, successfully conducted the second phase of cataract eye surgery for senior citizens of Gangtok District
The initiative was undertaken with the objective of providing timely and accessible eye-care services to senior citizens, particularly those identified with cataract conditions requiring surgical intervention.
Prior to the surgery, a cataract screening camp was conducted at GMC, Gangtok, where senior citizens were examined and assessed by medical professionals to identify their eye-care needs and determine their eligibility for cataract surgery.
Following the screening and medical assessment, the identified beneficiaries were taken to the Greater Lions Club, Siliguri, for the required cataract surgery and further medical care.
Ms. Manikala Gurung, Social Welfare Officer, Gangtok District, coordinated and facilitated the entire programme, ensuring necessary arrangements and support for the senior citizens. Ms. Priyanka Kharka Chettri from the Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Welfare Department accompanied and escorted the senior citizens throughout their journey to Siliguri and supported them during the surgical process.
The successful completion of the second phase of cataract surgery marks another important step towards improving the quality of life and promoting healthy ageing among senior citizens in Gangtok District.
