Fisheries Department Intensifies Riverine Conservation and Patrolling Efforts During Closed Fishing Season

The Fisheries Department, continues to strengthen its riverine conservation initiatives through regular patrolling and awareness programmes across major river stretches under Pakyong and Gangtok districts. These conservation and enforcement activities are being jointly conducted by officials of both districts to ensure the protection and sustainable management of aquatic resources during the annual closed fishing season.
The field team is headed by Krishna Subba, Block Officer, Rangpo, and comprises Kanishka Sharma (Head Fisheries Guard), Umesh Chettri (Fisheries Guard), and Milan Rai (Chowkidar, Sirwani Farm).
As part of the department’s routine conservation drive, extensive patrolling was carried out across various river stretches, including Topakhani, Singtam to Golitar Confluence, Singtam to Rangpo Beat, Rorathang to Rangpo.
During the inspections, no incidents of illegal activities were detected in the monitored areas. The team interacted with local fishermen and conducted awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of protecting riverine biodiversity and adhering to fisheries regulations.
The Fisheries Department would like to inform that the annual closed season for fishing using Cast Net and Rod & Line remains in force from 1st April to 30th June. The restriction has been implemented to safeguard fish populations during their critical breeding and spawning period, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of the state’s fisheries resources.
The Fisheries Department appreciates the cooperation extended by local communities and fishermen in supporting conservation efforts. Continuous vigilance, awareness generation, and collaborative action remain essential for preserving Sikkim’s rich aquatic biodiversity and maintaining healthy river ecosystems for future generations.
