NBBGC, Tadong Achieves DBT-STAR College Status — A First for Sikkim and North Bengal

Dr. D. Purohit, Principal, Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College (NBBGC), Tadong, is pleased to inform that the college has achieved a historic milestone by being selected under the prestigious DBT-STAR College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. With this recognition, NBBGC becomes the first college in the entire region of Sikkim and North Bengal to receive this unique distinction.

The College initially submitted a proposal under the scheme and was subsequently shortlisted among 34 institutions. The Coordinator, Dr. Satyadeep S. Chhetri, along with Assistant Coordinator, Dr. Mingma T. Sherpa, presented the final proposal during the second week of March at the DBT headquarter in New Delhi. Each year, only 10–15 colleges across India are selected under this prestigious scheme.

NBBGC also acknowledges the valuable mentorship support extended by Hindu College, University of Delhi, during the preparation of the proposal. The two institutions are actively collaborating under the Vidya Vistaar Programme of the Government of India.

Under the DBT-STAR College Scheme, the college is expected to receive financial assistance of approximately Rupees One crore over a period of three years specifically to the science departments of the college. These funds will be utilized to strengthen laboratory infrastructure, procure advanced scientific equipment, and organize workshops, seminars, and training programs for both students and faculty. The initiative aims to promote interdisciplinary learning, enhance practical skills, and encourage research-oriented education at the undergraduate level.

The Principal, faculty, and students have expressed great pride in this accomplishment, which is set to significantly elevate the quality of science education in the region. NBBGC reaffirms its commitment to fostering innovation and academic excellence in the eastern Himalayan region.
