Three Days Capacity Building Programme on Enhancing English Language and Literacy through Activity-based Learning for Primary Teachers of Gyalshing and Soreng Districts

Gyalshing, 13 August: DIET, Gyalshing successfully conducted “Three days’ Capacity Building Programme on Enhancing English Language and Literacy through Activity-Based Learning for primary teachers of designated PM SHRI Schools of Gyalshing and Soreng Districts” from 10th to 12th August. A total of 20 teachers from 12 PM SHRI Schools participated in the programme. The training was aligned with the pedagogical and assessment approaches of NEP 2020, with emphasis on developing Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) skills through learner-centred and activity-based methods.

Day 1 focused on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), the importance of ECCE and foundational-stage learning. Sessions also covered assessment practices and tools, including checklists, anecdotal records, rubrics and portfolios, with hands-on activities for formative assessment and reporting.

Day 2 focused on ECCE and Foundational Literacy–Language Development. Participants explored domains of child development, the role of NCERT in ECCE, phonics and letter-sound relationships, initial sounds, syllables, alliteration, blending and segmenting, phoneme manipulation, competencies and learning outcomes. Various interactive activities, games, songs, storytelling and classroom-based activities were demonstrated.

Day 3 continued with practical approaches to language development, including role play, dramatization, puppetry, classroom conversations, reflective journals and sharing of classroom experiences. A session on Socio-Emotional Learning helped participants explore self-awareness, emotional regulation and positive classroom interactions through engaging activities.

The Valedictory Session was graced by Mr. Rajesh Thapa, Joint Director-cum-Chief Education Officer, Education Department, Gyalshing District, along with Mrs. Parumita Rai, Principal, DIET Gyalshing, and the faculty members. The three-day programme was summarised, and the pre-test and post-test findings were shared by Ms. Sadhna Gurung. The programme concluded with words of encouragement from the Principal and the Chief Education Officer, followed by the vote of thanks and distribution of certificates to the participants.

The programme was successfully coordinated by Ms. Shreejana Chettri, Lecturer, Science, DIET Gyalshing, and provided teachers with practical, engaging and innovative strategies for strengthening English language and literacy in primary classrooms
