Joint Inspection Conducted at Chandmari Area to Assess Sinking Zone Damage

Gangtok, 9 February 2026:

A joint inspection was conducted today in the Chandmari area to assess the deteriorating condition of the sinking zone, which has worsened significantly following the recent earthquake.

The inspection was led by the Area MLA, Mr Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, along with the Area councillor and Under the direction of the District Collector, the Deputy Director, Ms Bijayta Kharel, attended the inspection.

The inspection team visited the affected localities to review the extent of damage caused to residential structures due to ongoing land subsidence, further aggravated by the recent seismic activity. During the inspection, it was observed that several houses belonging to local residents have suffered damage ranging from minor cracks to severe structural distress, raising serious safety concerns.

Officials interacted with affected residents to understand ground-level issues and took note of visible damages to buildings. The team assured the locals that their concerns have been noted and that necessary steps would be taken after a detailed technical assessment to mitigate further risks and ensure public safety.

The joint inspection underscores the administration’s commitment to closely monitor vulnerable areas and initiate appropriate remedial measures in coordination with concerned departments.
