Day 6 (Final day) of Highway Coverage Drive under Mission Clean Sky
Stretch covered: Seesa Golai to Vajra Mall
Gangtok, 9th April 2026: The inspection, held from 10 am to 2:30 pm, was led by Bhawesh Khyalia, IAS, Assistant Collector, Gangtok, along with officials from concerned departments and representatives from various ISP companies.
Besides the overhead wires issue, all administrative matters along the highway were handled by the driver.
The Smart City department is the primary department with which the district administration will undertake undergrounding of overhead wires along the highway. AE Shabman Tamang along with her team, including JE Dorjee, Mani Kumar and Yogesh were pivotal to the success of the drive.
The Power Department was included in the drive to simultaneously address the issues of removing legacy infrastructure, while providing mutual complementarities. Executive Engineer Lakpa D Sherpa was present on all days, and along with her respective JEs, contributed to the success of the drive.
Roads and Bridges Department, represented by their JE Uzzwal, took note of all the issues related to construction and undergrounding across the Highway. JE’s expertise enabled smooth planning for routing the wires.
PHE Department, represented by Divisional Engineer (GWS) and her JEs, was present to document the issue of overhead and unsystematic water pipes in the urban areas. Their presence is part of the future ambitions of the district administration to systematise the water connections in the district.
GMC representatives came daily for the inspections to note and address the issues along the highway, such as clearance of Garbage, documenting needs to undertake minor repair works etc.
The Forest Department came daily to note the need for trimming and clearing potentially dangerous tree branches overhanging the Highway.
The Police Department provided necessary support on the ground to successfully carry out this drive
A special thanks is hereby given to the representatives of all ISPs who diligently worked in this drive, and have been working under Mission Clean Sky to make Gangtok a safer and more beautiful city.
The drive was to map out the future action plan under Mission Clean Sky for undergrounding of the wires, and will be followed by implementation works once the plan is finalised by Shri Tushar G Nikhare, IAS, District Collector-cum-Magistrate, Gangtok.
