Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament Organized at SGSC, Chakung

Chakung, March 6: The District Level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament 2026 was successfully organized on Thursday at the College Auditorium of Sikkim Government Science College (SGSC), Chakung. The event was organized by My Bharat in collaboration with the NSS Unit of the college with the objective of encouraging youth participation in democratic dialogue and strengthening awareness about parliamentary practices among students.

The theme of the District Level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament 2026 was “50 Years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian Democracy,” which encouraged youths to reflect on the significance of constitutional values, democratic institutions, and the importance of safeguarding civil liberties in the country.

The programme commenced at 11:00 AM with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the College Anthem by the college choir group. The dignitaries and jury members were welcomed with the traditional offering of khadas.

Delivering the welcome address, Mr. Jiwan Subba, Programme Officer of NSS and Head of the Department of Physics, highlighted the importance of engaging youth in discussions related to democracy and nation-building. The Principal of SGSC, Dr. Iyatta M. Upreti, also addressed the gathering and encouraged students to actively participate in such platforms that nurture leadership, awareness, and responsible citizenship.

The Youth Parliament session then commenced, where participants assumed the roles of parliamentarians and presented their views based on the given theme. The session reflected the participants’ understanding of democratic processes, public speaking skills, and critical thinking.

The panel of judges for the event included Dr. Iyatta M. Upreti, Dr. Devi Kala Lama, Principal of Sikkim Government B.Ed College, Soreng; Mr. Jiwan Subba; and Mr. Ganesh Subba, PGT (Political Science), Government Senior Secondary School, Chakung.

The programme was also attended by Mr. Dev Nepal, Programme Manager, Piramal Foundation under the Aspirational District Programme, NITI Aayog, and Mr. Aditya Sharma, Aspirational Block Fellow NITI Aayog, Soreng District. The programme further witnessed the presence of the Vice-Principal, Dean of Students Affairs, Heads of various Departments, faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students of the college.

Following the deliberations, valuable feedback was shared by the judges Dr. Devi Kala Lama and Dr. Iyatta M. Upreti, who appreciated the participants for their thoughtful insights and encouraged them to continue engaging in constructive democratic dialogue.

The programme concluded with the declaration of results and a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Dev Nepal. The event was efficiently anchored by Mr. Pancha Bdr. Baraily, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, SGSC.

The event served as a meaningful platform for students to engage with important historical and democratic issues while strengthening their understanding of parliamentary functioning and the responsibilities of citizens in a democratic nation.
