Five-Day Capacity Building Programme on Medicinal Plants organised by EIACP Resource Partner on Ecotourism, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology Concludes at Dzongu, Mangan District.

The five day Capacity Building Programme on Conservation and Propagation of Medicinal Plants, organised by the EIACP Resource Partner on Ecotourism, Sikkim, successfully concluded at Passingdang, Dzongu, on 28 August 2026. A total of 30 participants from Dzongu attended the programme. The programme was inaugurated on 24 August by Dr. Mahindra Tamang, BDO, Dzongu, followed by a technical session by Dr. Tika Prasad Sharma, Resource Person, on “Medicinal Plants of Sikkim.”
The programme included theoretical sessions, group discussions, experience sharing and field demonstrations covering identification, conservation, propagation, sustainable utilisation, legal aspects, and in-situ and ex-situ conservation of medicinal plants. Participants also received practical exposure to propagation techniques and the quadrat method for field study and documentation of medicinal plant species.
Resouce Person, Dr. Santosh Kumar Rai, Assistant Professor, Sikkim University highlighted the importance of medicinal plants, threats to their survival, conservation approaches and the relevant legal and regulatory framework along with field trips to parts of Dzongu for practical knowledge.
On 28th August, valedictory programme was graced by Dr. Suman Thapa, Director, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology. He interacted with the trainees and highlighted the potential of medicinal plants for conservation, sustainable utilisation and livelihood enhancement in Dzongu, while encouraging their responsible management and protection. The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants and Resource Persons, along with the felicitation of the Resource Persons with mementos as a token of appreciation for their valuable contribution. The programme concluded with a group photograph and vote of thanks.
