Orientation-cum-Training Programme for Probationary Veterinary Officers Successfully Concluded at Livestock Farm, Karfectar, Jorethang

The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Department, Government of Sikkim, under the aegis of Directorate of Veterinary Services, Krishi Bhawan, Tadong, successfully concluded the Orientation-cum-Training Programme for newly recruited Probationary Veterinary Officers at Livestock Farm, Karfectar. The programme was conducted from 18th May 2026 to 30th May 2026 across various units of the farm, including the Mother Dairy Farm, State Fodder Seed Bank cum Fodder Reserve, SARAH Field Unit, and Poultry Section, under the guidance of Dr. Phurba Lepcha, Joint Director, Livestock Farm, Karfectar.
The training formed part of the Department's capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping young veterinary officers with the technical, administrative, and practical skills required for effective service delivery in the livestock sector.
The programme adopted a holistic approach, integrating both theoretical and practical learning modules to ensure comprehensive professional development before the officers assume their respective assignments across the State.
During the theoretical sessions, participants engaged in technical discussions on livestock farm management, fodder and feeding management, approaches to clinical case handling, animal welfare issues, maintenance of administrative records and documentation, and implementation of departmental schemes and programmes. These sessions provided valuable insights into the diverse responsibilities of veterinary officers at the field level.
The practical component emphasized hands-on learning and field-based skill development. Participants received training in rectal examination of cattle for familiarization with reproductive tract structures during different stages of estrus and pregnancy. Practical sessions also covered fodder and toxic plant identification, scientific methods of fodder cultivation, silage preparation, poultry farm management, artificial insemination (AI) techniques & flaws, and the preparation and maintenance of surgical kits. These exercises were designed to strengthen the officers' diagnostic, reproductive management, and veterinary service delivery skills.
With the successful completion of the programme, the Probationary Veterinary Officers are now well-prepared to take charge of their respective postings and responsibilities as assigned by the Department.
