Soreng, September 2: A Capacity Building programme for Seed Growers was organized by Agriculture Department, Soreng District, at Mabong Segeng on the theme “Quality seed production technology of Paheli dal”. The main objective was to provide adequate knowledge and technology to the progressive farmers of the region for Quality Seed Production ofindigenous cultivar of Paheli Dal and to spread awareness about the importance of including traditional landraces in certified seed production chain.
The programme was attended by ADO Ms Amimsha Limboo, SMS Agronomy Mr. J.P Dulal, SMS Plant Pathology Mrs. Rohini Pradhan, SMS Soil Science Ms. Tilu Kumari Limboo, AI Mr. Ram Kumar Gurung, VLW Mr. Suren Tamang, FA Mr Dil Kumar Rai, field functionaries of Agriculture Department and progressive farmers of the GPU.
Mr. Dil Kumar Rai gave the welcome address followed by an introductory briefing by Ms Amimsha Limboo who shed light on the importance of quality seed production following scientifically sound practices, formal seed certification standards and maintaining genetic and physical purity of seed varieties that are suited to the agronomic conditions of Sikkim, such as Paheli dal with potential for large scale seed multiplication in the region.
Mr. J.P Dulal briefed about the package of practices to be followed, the importance of selecting suitable varieties, timely sowing, maintaining isolation distance, critical periods for irrigation and storage management. Ms. Tila Kumari Subba addressed the importance soil health management, use of soil health card to detect the nutrient requirements, use of soil ameliorants, importance of manuring and proper integrated nutrient management.
Mrs. Rohini Pradhan gave a detailed overview on pest and disease management and advised on preventive measures over remedial measures. She addressed farmer concerns and encouraged seed growers to follow organic and scientifically sound methods of IPM.
Mr. Ram Kumar Gurung briefed about the role of seed inspectors, the process involved in seed certification, SATHI portal and steps to be taken by the certified seed growers to ensure quality seed production standards are met. Further, schemes such as PMFBY and KCC were also highlighted.
The programme ended with an interactive session where farmers discussed various problems, experiences and challenges in the cultivation of crops in the region
