As part of the Week of Non-Violence being observed from September 29 to October 4, the Information and Public Relations Department, organised the screening of the film Gandhi, directed by Richard Attenborough, at the Conference Hall, Soochna Bhawan, Gangtok, today.
The screening was attended by officials of IPRD and representatives from the press and media.
Before the screening, Director, Information and Public Relations Department, Mr Sunil K. Mothey, highlighted the significance of the Week of Non-Violence and stressed the importance of promoting peace, non-violence, social harmony, patriotism, social service and social responsibility.
The International Day of Non-Violence is observed globally on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote awareness of the message of non-violence through education and public awareness.
As part of the observance, the week-long programme will continue with the screening of the 2006 documentary film - An Inconvenient Truth,later in the week. The film presents a slide show on global warming and calls for urgent action to address climate change.
