Gangtok, August 29 (IPR): Precision, composure and competitive spirit marked the 1st Governor’s Archery Gold Cup (Compound) Tournament 2026, as 19 teams from across Sikkim came together at Thathangchen, Gangtok, for the inaugural championship.
Minister for Ecclesiastical, PHED and Water Resources Departments and President, Sikkim Archery Association, Mr Sonam Lama, graced the tournament as the Chief Guest today. OSD to MLA, Mr Pujan Rai, attended the event as the Guest of Honour.
The Minister was warmly received by members of the organising committee upon his arrival and subsequently interacted with the participating archers.
The tournament witnessed an engaging contest between Gyalshing Red and Sochakgang(Gt), with both teams displaying accuracy, discipline, consistency and competitive spirit. The encounter drew interest from local spectators and archery enthusiasts gathered at the venue.
Organised by the Sikkim Archery Association, the championship aims to promote archery at the grassroots level, encourage greater participation among youth and provide emerging archers with valuable competitive exposure as they aspire towards State, national and international competitions.
The tournament is also part of the Association’s continued efforts to take major archery competitions to different districts of Sikkim, thereby widening the talent pool and strengthening the State’s sporting ecosystem.
With a prize purse of ₹5 lakh for the winners and ₹3 lakh for the runners-up, the inaugural Governor’s Archery Gold Cup has added further competitiveness to the championship while providing a significant platform for the growth of archery in Sikkim.
