National Road Safety Month Observed in Gangtok
Gangtok, January 30 (IPR):
As part of the observance of National Road Safety Month from January 1 to January 31, 2026, a Road Safety Awareness Rally was organised today in Gangtok district by 129 RCC 758 BRTF of Project Swastik under the Border Roads Organisation. The rally was conducted in line with the national theme "Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha", highlighting education and enforcement as key measures to address the rising number of road accidents in the country.
Led by the Chief Engineer of Project Swastik, Brigadier Amit Sakhre, the rally covered prominent tourist and public locations in the district, including Ganesh Tok, Bakthang Falls and Zero Point, to spread awareness among the general public.
Addressing the participants, Brigadier Sakhre urged all road users to strictly follow traffic rules and adopt safe driving practices. He emphasised that road safety is a collective responsibility and called upon drivers and riders to remain vigilant, disciplined and courteous to prevent avoidable accidents and save lives.
The awareness campaign highlighted the growing concern over road accidents in India, which claim lakhs of lives every year.
Over speeding, lane cutting and distracted driving were identified as the major causes of road accidents, underscoring the need for responsible and informed road users.
Participants were also briefed on safe driving practices, with special emphasis on the use of seat belts and helmets, which significantly reduce the severity of injuries during accidents.
As part of the drive, road safety pamphlets containing essential guidelines were distributed among drivers and riders to reinforce the message of safe and disciplined driving.
The rally concluded at the Project Swastik Headquarters at Burtuk. The programme witnessed the active participation of officials from the Indian Armed Forces, GREF and the Border Roads Organisation.
