Motor Vehicle Division, Gyalshing Organises Road Safety Awareness Programme


Gyalshing, January 29 (IPR):As part of Road Safety Month 2026, observed from 1st January to 31st January, the Motor Vehicle Division, Gyalshing District, organised a Road Safety Awareness Programme at the Community Hall, Gyalshing, today. The programme involved drivers and key stakeholders from across the district.

The programme aimed to sensitise drivers and the general public on the importance of road safety, responsible driving practices, and strict adherence to traffic rules to prevent road accidents and save lives.

The programme was chaired by Mr Tenzing D Denzongpa, District Collector, Gyalshing, and was accompanied by Mr Tshering Sherpa, Superintendent of Police,Mr Devendra Prasad Sharma President GNP, Mr Ram Hang Subba Regional Transport Officer (RTO), representatives from Driver Associations, officials from various departments, students and public.

Addressing the gathering, the District Collector highlighted various aspects of road safety and instructed vehicle owners and drivers to prominently display their contact mobile numbers on their vehicles for emergency purposes. He stated that this practice would help in quick identification and timely assistance during accidents or emergencies.

He also informed about ongoing road maintenance works across the district to improve road conditions and ensure safer travel. He assured that the district administration is committed to strengthening road infrastructure and reducing accident risks. Emphasising responsible driving, he urged drivers to follow traffic rules, avoid over-speeding, and remain alert at all times. He further encouraged public cooperation in promoting road safety.

The Superintendent of Police, Gyalshing, addressed the gathering on issues related to road encroachment and urged the concerned departments to take necessary and timely action to ensure smooth traffic movement and public safety.He highlighted the misuse of private vehicles for commercial purposes and emphasised the need for strict monitoring and enforcement in this regard. Stressing the importance of vehicular fitness, he called for stringent enforcement before issuing smoke test certificates.

Further he advised to avoid unnecessary honking and the use of high-intensity LED lights, which pose risks to other road users. He underscored the responsible use of horns to minimise noise pollution and shared key measures for effective accident prevention and control.

The RTO Gyalshing in his address emphasised the importance of road discipline and maintaining up-to-date vehicle documents. He highlighted the need for timely renewal of documents to ensure legal compliance and safer roads. Mr Biren Rai, ARTO, Gyalshing, in his welcome address, briefed the gathering on the objectives and significance of the programme. He highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in promoting road safety and adherence to traffic rules.He concluded by appealing to all stakeholders to cooperate with the authorities in promoting safe, disciplined, and responsible driving practices.

Mr Chinta Mani Sharma from the Police Department highlighted key aspects of road safety, including the importance of wearing helmets, obeying traffic signals, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, preventing over-speeding and drunk driving, and proper use of emergency lights.

Mr Abhay Tewari (MVI) informed participants about various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and explained the major causes of road accidents.

Representatives from the Health Department,Gyalshing briefed the gathering on mental health issues and highlighted how alcohol consumption and stress contribute to road accidents.

Participants actively took part in the programme, demonstrating their commitment to promoting road safety awareness and fostering a culture of safe and responsible driving in the district.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Mahendra Subedi (HA).
