Mangan, 17th June 2026: A site meeting was convened on 17th June 2026 at the B2 Bridge under the chairmanship of the Area MLA, Shri Thenlay Tshering Bhutia, to discuss issues relating to the permissible load-bearing capacity of the bridge and to ensure the safety of commuters and transportation activities in the area.
The meeting was attended by Shri L.B. Chettri, Superintendent of Police, Mangan District; Shri M. Subba, Superintendent of Police, Gangtok District; Smt Monika Rai, SDM Kabi, Shri Tashi Wangyal Bhutia, BDO Kabi, Smt R. Wongmu, SDPO Mangan; PI Sonam Lachenpa, Traffic Branch; SI Ang Dawa, SHO Phodong; SI Tshering Bhutia, IC Kabi, along with officials from the National Highways Division, Panchayat representatives, members of the Truck Drivers’ Association, and members of the general public.
After detailed deliberations and review of the technical assessment reports, the following decisions were arrived at:
1. Vehicles of the 407 category carrying loads within the prescribed permissible limit of 08 (eight) tonnes shall be permitted to ply across the B2 Bridge.
2. It was noted that the last technical inspection of the bridge was conducted in the year 2022, following which the competent authority had fixed the permissible load-bearing capacity at 08 tonnes for 407 category trucks.
3. To ensure strict compliance with the prescribed load restrictions, necessary measures shall be undertaken by the concerned authorities to monitor and prevent the movement of overloaded vehicles entering Mangan District through the bridge.
4. Awareness programmes shall be conducted in coordination with the Truck Drivers’ Association and other stakeholders. Information regarding the bridge’s load-bearing restrictions shall also be disseminated through print, electronic, and social media platforms to promote public awareness and ensure wider compliance.
The District Administration and Police Department have appealed to all transport operators, drivers, and members of the public to strictly adhere to the prescribed load limits in the larger interest of public safety and to prevent any damage to critical infrastructure.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from all stakeholders to ensure strict enforcement of safety norms and smooth vehicular movement in the region.
