Mangan, November 2 (IPR): Phidang, the gateway to Lower Dzongu in North Sikkim is adorned with a new landmark - a ‘I Love Dzongu’ selfie point right at the entrance.
The Selfie Point was inaugurated by Minister Forest and Environment Department-cum-MLA Dzongu Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha today, marking a moment of pride and celebration for the people of Dzongu.
Located at Phidang, the “I Love Dzongu” landmark stands as a symbol of Dzongu’s unique identity — a place celebrated for its serene landscapes, rich traditions, and close-knit community life.
Alongside the ‘I Love Dzongu’ selfie point is a replica model of the Sumok Thyaktuk, an intricately designed hat unique to the Lepcha community.
The initiative, undertaken by the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Passingdang, aims to highlight the region’s cultural identity and natural charm while fostering a shared sense of belonging among its residents.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Upadhyaksha, Mangan, Ms Sonam Kipa Bhutia, Chairperson, Horticulture Department, Ms Ongkit Lepcha, SDM Dzongu Mr Gideon Lepcha, BDO Dzongu Dr Mahendra Tamang, Zilla and Gram Panchayat members of the block, OSD Mr Roshan Limboo, officers of concerned line departments and community members.
The event commenced with a traditional prayer ceremony conducted by the local shaman, Boongthing, to bless the occasion, followed by the formal inauguration of the new landmark.
This was followed by a briefing from BDO, Dzongu, Dr Mahendra Tamang on the significance of the project and its role in promoting tourism in the area. The BDO stated that the initiative was a small contribution of the BAC, the panchayats and the people of Dzongu to further augment the ongoing developmental efforts in the constituency under the leadership of MLA Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha lauded the efforts of BAC Passingdang for their creative and community-driven vision, noting that such initiatives not only beautify public spaces but also strengthen local pride and promote responsible tourism. He added that the selfie point will add to the beauty of the region and will attract tourists and local visitors alike. He also commended the town planner and designer Mr Penzang Lepcha for his contribution to the project and expressed his hope for continued support in developing the constituency.
The Minister informed that the work of protection wall along the river bank will commence soon, under the strict supervision of concerned departments. He also added that necessary amenities would be planned around the selfie point to cater to the needs of visitors.
The programme also featured cultural performances by the students of Taryang Primary School and a presentation of a letter of appreciation to land owner Mr Gyan Ongrub Lepcha, who was also acknowdeged for his contribution towards promoting sustainable and community-based tourism.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Panchayat President, Lum Gor GPU,
Mr Dawa Dorjee Lepcha who extended
heartfelt appreciation to all who contributed to the successful completion of the project.
The landmark now welcomes visitors to experience and celebrate the spirit of Dzongu.
