Girls’ Changing Room Inaugurated at Government Senior Secondary School Assam Lingzey

Pakyong, August 19 (IPR): A dedicated Girls’ Changing Room was inaugurated at Government Senior Secondary School, Assam Lingzey, today marking a step towards promoting menstrual hygiene, dignity and the wellbeing of adolescent girls.

The initiative forms part of the year-long Alkem-Sulabh Sanitation Club initiative, undertaken in association with the Education Department, to reimagine and redesign school changing spaces based on the needs and experiences of adolescent girls.

The initiative aims to create a safe, private and supportive environment where girls can manage their menstruation with dignity, confidence and comfort, helping break the silence, stigma and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.

The facility was inaugurated by Joint Director, Education Department, Namcheybung Block, Mr NB Subba, and CSR representative of Alkem Foundation, Mr Samir Kumar, in the presence of Headmaster, Dr Keshav Gautam; Chief Coordinator, Sulabh Sanitation Club, New Delhi, Mr Rupak Roy Choudhury, school representatives, teachers and members of the Sanitation Club.

Addressing the gathering, Joint Director Mr NB Subba expressed his gratitude for the support from Alkem Foundation and Sulabh Sanitation Club, a wing SISASSS, New Delhi and highlighted their ongoing efforts towards promoting girls’ hygiene and wellbeing.

Counsellor, Sulabh Sanitation Club, Mrs Samikshya Das Mohapatra, thanked the students and club members for their participation and for taking responsibility for the maintenance of the facility.

Likewise, a student shared her experience of the programme and highlighted how the awareness and training provided through the Alkem–Sulabh Sanitation Club initiative helped students understand menstruation as a natural process and the importance of approaching it with knowledge and care.
