Folk Tales Narration Celebrates Indigenous Oral Traditions at Creative Hub 2.0, Jorethang


Namchi, 21 January (IPR): The eighth day of the Folk Tales Narration programme, organised at Creative Hub 2.0, Green Park, Jorethang, today showcased the rich and vibrant oral traditions of the Limboo and Rai communities.

The event was graced by Chairman of the Sikkim Film Board Mr Tashi Tshering Bhutia, as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by the Secretary Information and Public Relations Department Ms Annapurna Alley, along with Officers from IPR Department.

Also present at the event were music producer Mr Ejaz Ali, music composer, lyricist and singer Mr C B Gurung, and playback singer Mr Thupden Bhutia as the Guests of the Day.

Representing the Limboo community Mr Sanbir Limboo of the Sikkim Limboo Literary Association delivered an address on the theme “Jorethang Mela and the Relationship of the Limboo Community.”

He highlighted the cultural significance of Kokfekwa Tongnam, Palam, and Hakpali, while elaborating on the rich traditions and heritage of the Limboo community. He further emphasised the need to preserve Kokfekwa Tongnam and underscored the historical importance of the Jorethang Mela in safeguarding Limboo cultural identity.

Ms Pratima Rai of the Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh presented the folk tale “Khanochong,” offering valuable insights into Tayama, Khiyama, and Hetchhakuppa—important ritual traditions of the Rai community closely associated with ancestral worship and spiritual beliefs.

Through her narration, she highlighted moral values such as strong willpower, self-confidence, and the importance of honouring one’s promises, which formed the core message of the tale.

In his address, the Chairman of the Sikkim Film Board Mr Tashi Tshering Bhutia, lauded the Creative Hub initiative and appreciated the commendable efforts of the Information and Public Relations Department. He remarked that such platforms play a crucial role in preserving and promoting Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.

He further stated that the initiative reflects the visionary leadership of the Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr Prem Singh Tamang, and commended the Secretary IPR Department Ms Annapurna Alley, along with the entire IPR team, for making Creative Hub 2.0 more vibrant and engaging.
