District Advisory Committee Meeting on PC-PNDT Act Held at Namchi


Namchi, 28 January (IPR): A meeting of the District Advisory Committee under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act, 1994, for Namchi District was held today at the Chamber of the District Collector, Namchi.

The meeting, convened with the approval of the District Collector-cum-Chairperson, focused on reviewing the effective implementation of the PC-PNDT Act and strengthening measures to prevent the misuse of diagnostic techniques for sex determination in the district.

Addressing the members, the District Collector underscored the importance of strict enforcement of the PC-PNDT Act and emphasised the need for sustained sensitisation, public awareness and collective responsibility to uphold gender equality and safeguard the rights and dignity of the girl child.

She further highlighted the crucial role of line departments, medical professionals, civil society organisations and the media in promoting ethical medical practices and fostering community-level awareness against gender-biased sex selection.

The Committee also deliberated on the proposal to organise a one-day orientation programme for the members of the District Advisory Committee, which is proposed to be conducted shortly to ensure a more structured approach and the smooth functioning of the PC-PNDT mechanism in the district.

The meeting was attended by members of the District Advisory Committee, including Chief Medical Officer Namchi Dr Junita Yonzon, DRCHO Namchi Mr B K Chauhan, CNO Namchi Ms Bijay Laxmi Rai, Legal Retainer,Ms Sushila Rai, Distict Information Officer Ms Deepti Pradhan ,NGO (DRISHTI) representative Mr Passang Tshering Bhutia, Heads of the Gynaecology and Radiology Departments of District Hospital Namchi along with officials from the Health & Family Welfare Department, who shared their valuable inputs.

The meeting was convened under the authority of the Chief Medical Officer, Namchi District, who also serves as the Appropriate Authority for the PC-PNDT Cell, Namchi District.
