The 79th Independence Day Open Knockout Football Tournament 2025 continues to engage football enthusiasts as it enters its sixth day at St Xavier's School Ground today.
The tournament is being organised by Pakyong Sporting Club in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre (DAC), Pakyong, while commemorating 50 years of Sikkim's statehood and promoting the message for Nasha Mukt Sikkim.
Minister for Roads and Bridges, Mr NB Dahal, graced the occasion as the esteemed Chief Guest. Alongside him, SE Roads and Bridges Department, Mr Naween Gurung; SE RDD, Mr TN Adhikari; DE Road & Bridges Department, Mr Bikash Rai; DE Road & Bridges Department, Mr Diwas Basnett and DE PHE Department, Mr Rajen Gurung, were the Guests of Honour.
Likewise, AE Road & Bridges Department, Mr Navin Chettri; AE Road & Bridges Department, Mr Bikash Chettri and RO Forest and Environment Department, Mr Purna Kumar Subba, as Special Guests for the day.
The first match of the second round featured a thrilling match between St Xavier's School and Pakyong United SC, wherein St Xavier's School emerged victorious in the tie-breaker with a score of 5-4.
The “Man of the Match” title was accorded to Mr Dawa Sherpa for his performance during the match.
Entering its fifth day, the District Level Inter School Under-14 Boys Football Tournament, jointly organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department and DAC Pakyong, held an exciting match between St Xavier School and CMMS (Assam Linzey), clinching a win for St Xavier School with a score of 4-1.
Various cultural performances were also showcased by Yankten GPU and Bahai School, Linkey, along with a marching band performance by the students of St Xaviers School.
Also present during the event were DC Pakyong, Mr Rohan Agawane; ADC Pakyong, Mr Sangay Gyatso Bhutia; Joint Director, BAC Pakyong, Ms Poonam Pradhan; Deputy Director IEC, PHC Pakyong, Mr Gyanendra Karki, along with members from Pakyong Sporting Club and the general public.
