Mahatma Sirijunga Teyongsi’s 321st Birth Anniversary Observed at Aho Yangtam
Pakyong, December 12 (IPR): Minister for Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Departments, and MLA Namcheybong, Mr Raju Basnet, took part in the observance of the 321st Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Sirijunga Teyongsi at Aho Yangtam in Pakyong District. The event was conducted by the Aho Yuma Manghim Committee.
During his address, the Minister conveyed his appreciation for being included in the event held at Aho Yuma Manghim.
He further acknowledged Mahatma Sirijunga Teyongsi’s profound contribution to society, stating that such commemorations inspire the younger generation to stay rooted in their identity and values.
Likewise, Joint Director, Education Department, Mr NB Subba, briefed the gathering on the significance of celebrating the day on 12 December. He informed that Mahatma Sirijunga Teyongsi, born on 12 December 1704, is revered as a prominent Limbu scholar and cultural reformer who revived and promoted the traditional Sirijunga script, thereby strengthening the linguistic and cultural identity of the community. His birth anniversary is celebrated to honour his immense contribution to the preservation of the Limbu language, literature, and indigenous knowledge. His dedication, scholarship, and ultimate martyrdom continue to inspire generations, making this day a moment to reflect on cultural heritage and collective responsibility towards its preservation.
The programme featured various cultural performances, including Limbu dance, songs, and poem recitations. Also, felicitation was presented to former members of the committee, followed by prize distribution for the winning schools of the Rhymes, Poem, and Essay competitions.
The event saw the presence of panchayat members, Aho Yuma Manghim Committee members, and the general public.
