International Women’s Day Celebrated in Gangtok


Gangtok, March 8 (IPR): The Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department (WCSC&DWD) organised a programme to commemorate International Women’s Day under the theme, “Give to Gain,” at Manan Kendra today.

The event had the presence of Deputy Speaker, SLA, Ms Raj Kumari Thapa, as the Chief Guest.

In her welcome address, Deputy Speaker, SLA, Ms Raj Kumari Thapa, highlighted the significance of women’s voting rights and their vital role in strengthening democracy. She emphasised that equality is not only a fundamental right but also a cornerstone for fostering social harmony and sustainable development.

She further stressed the need for strong coordination between men and women to achieve meaningful and effective outcomes in society. Referring to the theme of the programme, she stated that equality is essential for creating a balanced and progressive society. She also highlighted the growing participation and contributions of women in various fields.

Ms Thapa also spoke about the initiatives undertaken by the State Government for the welfare and empowerment of women. She appreciated the role of women bureaucrats and acknowledged the support of the Chief Minister in entrusting women with several important positions in the government.

Emphasising the importance of social values, she urged that change must begin at home, as building a strong society starts with strong families. She also highlighted the growing opportunities in entrepreneurship and encouraged women to explore in this field.

In his keynote address, Minister, WCSC&DWD, Printing and Stationery Department, Mr Samdup Lepcha, highlighted the importance and significance of the celebration, emphasising the vital role of women in the progress and development of society. He spoke about the rights and empowerment of women and acknowledged the achievements and contributions of women achievers from the state.

He further highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the State Government towards women empowerment and also acknowledged the political rights and growing participation of women in governance.

The Minister urged women to remain vigilant and stressed the importance of creating awareness among girl child about different situations and challenges in life. He also called upon everyone to work collectively under the banner Team Sikkim for the overall development of the state.

In her welcome address, Secretary, WCSC&DWD, Ms Normit Lepcha, elaborated on the theme of the programme, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility, empowerment, and mutual support in building a stronger society. She also highlighted the vision of Sunaulo, Samriddha ani Samarth Sikkim, underscoring the government’s commitment towards creating an inclusive and empowered state.

The event also featured performances by Tapashree Dance Academy, along with traditional Bhutia and Lepcha dances presented by the Culture Department.

The programme witnessed a skit highlighting important social issues such as domestic violence, sexual harassment at the workplace and cybercrime.

During the programme, the department also launched an orientation programme on workplace awareness under the Sikkim INSPIRE initiative.

Thereafter, women achievers from various fields were felicitated by the Chief Guest in recognition of their contributions. The awardees included:

▪︎ Ms Shova Rai, Beautician and Designer

▪︎ Ms Passang Lhamu Sherpa, Badminton Player

Also present were Minister, WCSC&DWD, Printing and Stationery Department, Mr Samdup Lepcha; MLA cum Advisor, RDD, Ms Kala Rai; Deputy Mayor, Ms Tshering Palden; councillors; Chairperson, Sikkim State Commission for Women, Ms Tanny Bhutia; Chairman, Sikkim Welfare Commission, Mr Nim Tshering Lepcha; members of SHGs, Anganwadi workers, teachers, students, and other dignitaries.

The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Additional Director, Mission Shakti, Ms Sonam Lhamu Bhutia.
