The District Hub for the Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Gyalshing District, under the Women, Child, Senior Citizens & Divyangjan Welfare Department, conducted an awareness program today on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Rimbik Senior Secondary School. The initiative aimed to enhance understanding of child protection laws among students, teachers, and community stakeholders.
The choice of the POCSO Act as the central theme emerged from discussions held with the local Panchayats and the Principal of Rimbik Senior Secondary School. During these consultations, it was clearly identified that child protection and awareness on POCSO are critical concerns in the area, requiring immediate and focused intervention. This collective assessment formed the basis for selecting the topic for the program.
The session featured Mahadev Rao, Advocate and Child Counsellor (DCPO, Geyzing) as the resource person, who conveyed detailed information on the POCSO Act. He explained key legal provisions, mandatory reporting duties, types of offences covered under the Act, early warning signs, and available support systems for children. His presentation emphasised the shared responsibility of families, schools, and the larger community in ensuring child safety and timely reporting.
The program witnessed active participation from students, teachers, parents, community members, and Panchayat representatives. Attendees engaged in discussions, raised queries, and shared concerns regarding child safety and preventive measures.
DHEW Gyalshing reaffirmed its commitment to promoting child protection through continuous outreach, collaboration with local institutions, and strengthening awareness at the grassroots level.
