Education Department Addresses Press Conference on Asha Para Medical & Nursing Institute Issue

Gangtok, February 10 (IPR): The Education Department, Government of Sikkim, today addressed a press conference regarding grievances of students associated with Asha Para Medical & Nursing Institute.

Principal Secretary, Education Department, Mr Sandeep Tambe informed that the Chief Minister had directed the department to verify the situation immediately and take necessary measures to protect the interests of the affected students.

In compliance, a fact-finding team was deputed, headed by Chairperson, Student Welfare Board, Mr Sonam Chopel, and comprising Additional Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha; Special Secretary, Education Department, Mr Ujwal Rai; and Law Officer, Education Department, Mr Jigmee Bhutia.

The team visited the concerned location , held meetings with students and stakeholders and assessed the matter on site.

Mr Sonam Chopel stated that the institute reportedly issued certificates to 10–12 final-year students without specifying the courses promised at admission. First and second-year students were also concerned about the validity and recognition of their certificates. Preliminary inspection revealed several discrepancies, and the institute is affiliated with NCVRT, which provides skill-based certification. A detailed report will be submitted to the Chief Minister for further direction, and the department is exploring solutions for the affected students.

The team also met the Commissioner of Siliguri, and the case has been registered with arrests made. Mr Chopel urged students to remain cautious and advised all institutions and NGOs to seek prior permission from the Education Department before conducting career counselling, coaching, or similar sessions.

Law Officer, Mr Jigmee Bhutia stated that the department is coordinating with the Government of West Bengal to verify the institute’s operations and ensure proper legal action.

Concluding the press conference, Principal Secretary, Mr Sandeep Tambe reiterated that the matter is being taken seriously, and efforts are underway to accommodate affected students in suitable institutions within Sikkim wherever feasible. He appealed to parents and students to exercise caution and approach the Education Department directly for guidance and clarification.
