IPR Department observes World Photography Day

Gangtok, 19 Aug (IPR): Every year, on the 19th of August, World Photography Day is commemorated worldwide with vigor and enthusiasm. People from all walks of life, irrespective of whether they are a photographer or not, come together to understand and also enlighten the globe about the importance of photography.

On this day, Information & Public Relations Department, headed by Secretary, Ms. Namrata Thapa, organized an exhibition at its premise at Soochna Bhawan in Tadong to honour this day for photographers and raise awareness and gain inspiration from the craft of photography.

Secretary, Ms. Thapa, while addressing the attendees at the exhibition, stated that the World Photography Day is a noble day for photographers and all lovers of photography. She said that in today’s world of rapid exchange and transformation of technology, the value of a photograph still holds high and that a single picture communicates an array of information to the viewer.

Assistant Director/Photo, Mr. Keshap Chettri, informed the attendees at the exhibition about the history of photography and that photography is more than a hobby and inspires people around the globe to do more and share more. He also briefed the attendees on the various vintage cameras on display and their workings and functions.

The department had exhibited a range of vintage cameras such as:

  • B2 Film Size Camera
  • TLR (Twin-Lens Reflex Camera)
  • 35mm Film SLR (Single Lens Reflex Camera)
  • Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex Camera)
  • DSLR *Fx. (Full-frame Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera)

Along with these, rare photographs from the department’s archives related to Sikkim and its history was also put up for public viewing.
