Namchi, 07 July (IPR): A meeting on Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) was held at the conference hall of Namchi DAC today. The meeting was chaired by Secretary, Rural Development Department, Mr. C.S. Rao, Additional Secretary, Ms. Sarika Pradhan, ADCs (Dev) Namchi and Ravangla, Mr. Milan Subba and Mr. Suman Gurung, officials from various line department and other stakeholders.
It maybe mentioned here that Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) is a time-bound, mission-mode water conservation campaign which will run in two phases. Currently, phase 1 is being implemented in Sikkim which commenced from 1st July to 15th September for the States and Union Territories.
Addressing the gathering, Secretary, RDD, Mr. Rao, explained in brief the concept and the objective of Jal Shakti Abhiyan which has been conceputalized by the Central Government with the intention to conserve water. He added that currently Sikkim is receiving rainfall of approximately 300 cm and underlined that this water needs to be preserved and further utilized in our day to day activities.
Mr. Rao informed that eight blocks in the South District has been identified for this scheme and urged the Block Development Officers to work in coordination with the various line departments and stakeholders for the success of this scheme. He also highlighted that it is imperative to organize awareness camps at various educational institutes in order for the students to understand the importance of this scheme at the grassroot level.
He added that district level water conservation plan has been drafted and a mela at Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Namthang will be held at the earliest wherein the progressive farmers will be provided with an array of activities alongwith choices in selection of crops which efficiently works for water conservation. He also pressed for a proper village water security plan, rain water harvesting and also efficient soil conversation measures in all the GPUs.
The Secretary further updated that the Forest Department can set up seedling distribution booths at village level in order to give impetus for plantation drive at rural level.
Additional Secretary, Ms. Sarika Pradhan, spoke about the significance of this programme and urged all the BDOs to organize a Gram Sabha on Jal Shakti Abhiyan and further maintain this Abhiyan in their blocks. She also added that there should be smooth communication campaign on TV, print and social media in order to mobilised and generate ample awareness for the campaign.
Ms. Pradhan further updated that the BDOs are required to identify one village per block for adoption in this Abhiyan.
