Namchi, 22 July (IPR): Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad accompanied by Hon’ble Minister of Buildings & Housing and Transport Departments cum Area MLA of Namthang Rateypani Constituency, Shri Sanjeet Kharel, visited and interacted with progressive farmers of South District at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Namthang today.
Joining him in this visit were District Collector (South), Shri Ragul K., Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong, Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Senior Scientist and Head KVK Namthang, Shri I.P. Shivakoti, alongside officials of line departments and progressive farmers of South District.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor advocated and encouraged the farming community of the district to avail the benefits of the government sponsored crop insurance scheme Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) which aims to reduce the premium burden on farmers and ensure early settlement of crop assurance claim for the full insured sum.
The Governor further stated that since Sikkim’s economy is linked with agriculture which is a major source of livelihood and economic security of the Sikkimese, the farmers can practice sustainable means of farming backed by a robust system of marketing. He also apprised the gathering upon PM-KISAN scheme which provides a payment of Rs. 6000 annually to the farmers in three equal installments and asked them to forward the list of genuine beneficiaries to the authorities to avail the grant.
Additionally, he also reinforced the demand of power tillers in all the GPUs under the Constituency as he stated it to be a very important consideration for the farmers working on small-sized and hilly terrain farms. He also emphasized the public of the area to give due importance to promoting village tourism in their area besides improving agricultural productivity.
Similarly, he also urged all the stakeholders to strive towards making Namthang Rateypani a model Constituency in terms of tourism related activities and exhorted the need of a monthly meeting in the KVK for timely updates and reports.
The Governor and Area MLA also participated in a plantation drive and took a brief tour of the farms in the vicinity of KVK, Namthang.
Minister cum Area MLA, Shri Sanjeet Kharel, also spoke on the occasion where he placed demands in view of the greater good of the progressive farmers of Namthang Rateypani Constituency.
Later during the day, the Governor accompanied by his entourage visited the Godrej Consumer Products Limited at Mamring as part of his day-long tour.
Upon his visit, it was informed by HR that the unit which has been functional since 2006 has producing two categories of its product namely Godrej shaving cream and Godrej Aer pocket which he informed that the latter product is i.e., Godrej Aer pocket is manufactured only in Sikkim and sold pan-India.
The Governor also took stock of the working conditions of the unit, strength of staff both local and non-locals, basic minimum facilities and future course of action of the unit.
In his brief address, the Governor stressed upon the introduction of new variants of Godrej products thereby increasing its production and generation of local employment.
Subsequently, the Governor also visited Zydus Healthcare Limited at Bagheykhola, East Sikkim and also interacted with the management and staff of the company.
