Hon’ble Member, National Commission for Safaikarmacharis visits West Sikkim

Gyalshing, 17th July 19 (IPR): The Meeting with  Hon’ble Member, National Commission for Safaikarmacharis, Shri. Manamandleshwar  Swami Sadanand Maharaj on “Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers Act, 2013” was organised today here at the conference hall of Zilla Bhawan, Kyongsha, West Sikkim.
The meeting was attended by District Collector, Shri. Karma R. Bonpo(IAS), SP West Shri. Tenzing Loden Lepcha (IPS), ADC Shri. K.L Lepcha, SDM(HQ), ADC(Dev), HRDD Addl. Director, BDO/Yuksam, MEO/Gyalshing, SWO, Sr.WO, Labour Inspector, representatives of Safaikarmacharis etc.
The agenda of the meeting were as follows:
(a) Review of implementation of Manual Scavengers Act, 2013.
(b) Study and evaluation of the economic and educational conditions of Safaikarmacharis.
(3) Review of re-survey of Manual Scavengers.
While addressing the gathering, Shri. Maharaj informed that the prime duty of the commission is for overall welfare and development of the SafaiKarmacharis. In this direction, the Commission for Safai Karmacharis has been established by the Government of India to resolve the problems and grievances faced by the Safai Karmacharis in the state. Taking into the consideration of their social status, facilities and opportunities for the removal of inequality and other innovative programmes are taken up by the Commission. It was delight to visit Sikkim and to know that no manual scavenging exists here and overwhelmed with the condition of safaikarmacharis working in Sikkim, he concluded.
In the interaction session, Chairman (Gyalshing Municipal Council), Shri. I.K Neopaney and Addl. Director UD&HD, Shri. D. R Thapa apprised the Hon’ble Member about the various basic facilities provided to the safaikarmacharis working under Gyalshing Municipal Council and UD&HD. Miss. Sikha Sharma, Bazar Inspector, highlighted some problems faced by the safaikarmacharis before the member of the commission like provision of housing facilities, sponsoring higher education of the siblings etc.
The safaikarmacharis present in the meeting expressed their satisfaction with the facilities being provided to them.
At the outset Shri. Tushar G.Nikhare(IAS),SDM(HQ) delivered the welcome address and the meeting concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Shri. D. R Thapa, Addl Director/UD&HD.
