National Voters Day To Encourage The Youth

Mangan, January 25: Every year the “National Voters’ Day is celebrated in order to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process. A vigorous exercise is undertaken to identify voters who have attained the age of 18years on 1st January of every year, across 8.5 lakh polling stations across the country and are enrolled and handed over EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card) on 25th January every year.
The National Voters Day was celebrated in North Sikkim amidst a large number of young voters. The program was chaired by District Collector cum District Electoral Officer North Shri Karma R. Bonpo . The program started with the lightning of ceremonial lamp by the chairperson and the video message of Honourable Chief Election Commissioner of India Shri Sunil Arorra was played. Present on the occasion was Joint Director HRDD Mrs Delak Pradhan, DIO/N, Under Secretary Elections, BLOs and staff from the district Election Cell. A Pledge was administered by the District Collector to resolve to protect the rich democratic traditions and uphold the sanctity of free and fair elections. The EPIC Cards were then handed over to the new voters.
The DC while congratulating the new voters stated that the voters have to be responsible citizens and exercise their right to vote without inducement of race, caste, religion. He stated that a massive exercise to enroll all voters has taken place and the final electoral roll will be published on 31st January 2019. He also informed about the voter helpline number 1950 and the android application for voters.
A Hands on EVM and VVPAT awareness was also held for the young voters to familiarize them with the process of voting with VVPATs. The program ended with vote of thanks by Under Secretary Election Cell North District.
