Training programme for Nodal Officers of various state government departments and non-government institutions on Voter Awareness Forum

Gangtok, January 16: (IPR) As per the directive of Election Commission of India (ECI), the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer organized a briefing/training programme for Nodal Officers of various state government departments and non-government institutions on Voter Awareness Forum (VAF) at the conference hall of Chief Electoral Office, Baluwakhani today.

The programme was chaired by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Sikkim, Shri R. Telang, officials of Electoral Office, nodal officers of various Departments and representative of pharma companies.

Addressing the gathering, CEO Shri R. Telang said that the main objective of VAF is to promote electoral awareness ahead of the general elections.

He informed that Sikkim is going to launch Voter Helpline number 1950 for the facilitation of voters in the state on National Voters Day (January 25).

“Voter Helpline number is aimed at making voters more empowered. It will help the electorate to get complete information about their electoral roll. It serves as an effective tool towards redressal of voter’s grievances related to EPIC, voter registration etc” said the CEO.

He informed that this helpline number will be available during office hours on any working day.

Earlier, SDM-Kabi, Shri Mahesh Sharma, who is the State Maser Trainer briefed about the formation and function of VAF.

He informed that VAF is a forum for generating awareness around the electoral process through different activities like discussion, quiz and painting completion and other engaging activities from community to university level.

The Master trainer informed about the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and Electronic Voting Machines, its functioning, how to operate and manage machines in detail. The VVPAT is paper slip machines which will come out when a voter casts his/her vote. The slip will automatically drop in a sealed box attached to the EVM for use by the election commission. It can only be seen by the concerned voter. She/he can know that the vote, she/he cast went to the candidate or not.
