Gangtok, Dec 7: (IPR) Chief Minister Shri Pawan Chamling met more than eighty Research Scholars and M. Phil students, at Samman Bhawan, today.
The Research Scholars and M. Phil students felicitated the Chief Minister for the unique accomplishment of being the longest serving Chief Minister in the Country.
Chief Minister while addressing the scholars made some key announcements.
He announced that the Government would enhance the fellowship stipend for research scholars to Fifteen Thousand from 1st January, 2019.Likewise, Travel Allowances will be provided from State Government for travelling outside the State for the submission of their subject papers. He also announced that the State will have its own Agriculture and Horticulture College in near future.
Also, a cash amount of Rupees Two Lakhs was handed over to the representatives of the Students by the Chief Minister for the Sikkim Scholars Forum.
The Chief Minister began his address by thanking the Students for a warm welcome and expressed that he was glad to be amongst them. He went on to state that ‘Change’ is necessary, not only in politics but in all spheres of life. However, one should always change for the better and not for the worse, he added. He then reminded the students that democracy meant a responsible government as well as responsible citizens. “Freedom lies with responsibility, only then the State can be truly democratic,” he said.
“It is evident from the activities of the Government that education is a priority sector and the Government is making all out efforts to bring about holistic development of human resource in the State through a plethora of student-friendly programs which will bear rich dividends in near future. It has been our prerogative in the Government to ensure that education is all inclusive and bias-free. I call upon the Research Scholars and M. Phil students to incline your ideals with that of the Government in imparting value based quality education, and work as instruments in ensuring that they benefit from the programs of the Government,” he added.
The Chief Minister put across his thoughts on gender and communal inequality and differences, stating that the government had drawn schemes and plans to counter the existing polarity and that, it was the people’s right as well as their duty to rightfully take what is theirs.
Imploring about the education sector in our state the Chief Minister spoke at length about the opportunity of free education formulated by the State Government. He advised the students to inculcate the competitive spirit in them so that they can equate themselves at par with the global students.
Further, the Chief Minister said that all the demands put forth by the Students will be fulfilled very soon and said that the government already has a plan to construct Best Green University.
During the session Research Scholars and M. Phil students also addressed, where they talked about the present day education system. They submitted a Memorandum containing the suggestions for the academic growth of the State. Suggestions were put forth to make education more qualitative and further to make it rich in the State. They also placed their demands and grievances before the Chief Minister.
