The Office of the District Collector, Gangtok, the Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim and the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (Department of Pharmacology) successfully conducted a survey titled “Prevalence and Pattern of Substance Abuse Amongst College Students and Government Employees of Gangtok District.”
Dr. Sushrut Varun Satpathy and Dr. Ena Pradhan of the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS)/Central Referral Hospital (CRH) successfully submitted the report of their study on 5th July 2024 at the DC Office, Gangtok, in the presence of Shri Tushar Nikhare, District Collector of Gangtok District, and Shri G.L. Meena, SDM (HQ), Gangtok.
The data collected during the year-long pilot study highlighted the prevalence and pattern of substance abuse among college students and government employees of Gangtok District. The report suggests a high percentage of substance users among government employees as well as college students, necessitating intervention at the basic level. This study intends to serve as a benchmark for further similar studies in the future, covering the entire state of Sikkim.
