Pakyong, 15 March (IPR): Mr Tashi Chophel, District Collector cum District Election Officer, convened a meeting with Campus Ambassadors of all Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) of Pakyong District regarding the deployment of volunteers in Polling Booths for the ensuing general election in 2024 at RURBAN Community Complex, RDD, Pakyong today.
Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) serve as platforms to engage school students through activities and hands-on experience to sensitise them about their electoral rights. Constituted at the behest of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in all educational institutions, ELCs aim to raise awareness and ensure the participation of youth and future voters, who are the pillars of Indian democracy.
During the meeting, DC Pakyong provided a detailed overview of Electoral Literacy Clubs, outlining their aims and objectives in developing and sustaining an electoral culture among future and new voters. ELCs work to educate future voters about enrollment and other electoral processes, such as EVM/VVPAT. The roles of Campus Ambassadors of all ELCs were also discussed, emphasising their responsibility to volunteer and assist senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PwD), and new voters during the polling day.
Furthermore, DC Pakyong interacted with the students to review the activities undertaken thus far as part of the Systematic Voter’s Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Programme.
Ms Merina Rai, Joint Secretary, Election Cell, also delivered an informative session for Campus Ambassadors of all ELCs, outlining their crucial responsibilities for the forthcoming general elections. Moreover, she shared essential insights with students regarding the procedural steps for enrolling in the electoral process once they attain eligibility.
The meeting was attended by Mr Raju Pradhan Deputy Secretary, Election Cell, along with teachers and students from 35 schools within Pakyong District.
