Gangtok, 04 Oct (IPR): A presentation on Multi-State Mock Exercise on Earthquake Disaster was held at the Conference Hall of District Collector’s Office by District Disaster Management Authority in the presence of Chairperson (DDMA)-DC East, Shri Kapil Meena, SP East, ADC East, SDM Rangpo and representatives from NYKS, NDRF, SDRF, NHPC, private companies and all the line departments involved.
The meeting was held to brief all the representatives present for the upcoming Multi-State level Mock Exercise on Earthquake disaster by National Disaster Management Authority which is simultaneously to be held in all the districts of the state and hill districts of West Bengal on 10th October 2018.
A comprehensive mock exercise on earthquake scenario will be stimulated whereby a magnitude of 8.7 RS earthquake with intensity 8-9 MSK at 11:15 IST on 10th October 2018 at Shillong, Meghalaya will be staged. The reports of damage will be received by SDM Rangpo and all the mechanisms of the State will be put into action thereafter. Various possible scenarios at different places will be staged like building collapse, fire accident, blockages of roads, hospital preparedness, evacuations, relief camps, communication lines and setting up of control rooms. A staging area will also be set up for pooling of all resources as per Disaster Management Rules.
The DC East instructed that this mock exercise should be taken seriously as earthquakes are nature hazards and does not come with any warning so preparedness of any unfortunate incidents is very important. He asked for cooperation from all the line departments and suggested for noting the Real Time response so that the district can take better measures in case of any emergency. He said that all the mechanisms are in place and they will be sent to the spot as per the requirement of their expertise under the direction of Incident Commander.
DPO East, Shri Sonam W. Lepcha, went through the step by step process of the whole exercise and briefed everyone present about their roles and responsibilities. He said that the exercise is being carried out to sensitize and create awareness and is undertaken purely on mock basis. He further informed that there is no apprehension of danger or panic due to the activity as all necessary measures of public safety has been undertaken. Along with this mock exercise, an awareness rally by students is also planned to be organized on the same day.
