Gyalshing, 02 Oct (IPR): The commemoration of the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated in a grandeur manner by the District Administration Center in association with the Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department and Sikkim Akademi at the Community Hall in Gyalshing, West Sikkim. Additional District Collector (West), Shri Karma Lodey Lepcha, chaired the occasion as chief guest along with Superintendent of Police, Shri Tenzing Loden Lepcha, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Shri Tushar Nikhare, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Shri Manish K Verma, Chairman GMC and other officials and educational institution representatives of Gyalshing and Pelling.
Superintendent of Police, Shri Lepcha, addressed the students and the gathering about how all should learn from the able leader like Mahatma Gandhi. He mentioned that the lessons learned from his life needs to be followed, lessons on equality, brotherhood and secularism are to be understood and followed by the coming generations if they want changes which they want to see in India in the coming days.
An elocution competition on ‘Mahatma Gandhi and his contribution towards India’s Independence’ was also conducted to commemorate Gandhi’s contribution towards the Indian Independence struggle. A total of nine participants from different schools, college and DIET came forward to make the birth anniversary a memorable one. Kyongsa Girls Senior Secondary School stood first in the competition followed by Pelling SSS in the second position and Lingchom Secondary School in the third position.
A short documentary on Mahatma Gandhi’s life was also screened to commemorate his 149th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
