State Disaster Risk Reduction Day observed at Soreng

Soreng, September 18(IPR): The District Disaster Management Authority, Soreng in collaboration with Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority organized the State Disaster Risk Reduction Day at the auditorium hall of Soreng Senior Secondary School, today.
Marking the 11th year of the catastrophic calamity that fell upon the State, the main objective of the program was to promote awareness and preparedness against the recurrence of such disastrous adversities. The program also focused on the concept of building community resilience to disaster.
DC, Soreng cum Chairperson (DDMA), Shri Bhim Thatal attended the event as the Chief Guest along with SP, Shri J. Jayapandiyan, IPS, ADM, Shri Dhiraj Subedi, SDM (HQ), Shri D.R Bista, SDPO, Shri Bimal Gurung, BDOs, Officials from line department, members of IRBn 2nd Battalion/State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Aapda Mitra, students and local gentry amongst others.
Addressing the gathering as the keynote speaker, DC, Shri Bhim Thatal spoke on the importance of the day and the much-needed awareness on disasters that are prone to the State. Adding to this, he said the community as a whole must develop the sense of acting as the first responder during such occurrences. He reiterated that awareness is the key factor for self security and safety. He also spoke extensively on Disaster Management Act while informing the differences between disaster and disruption along with the repercussion the society faces as a result of human error and negligence.
Further, he also acknowledged the responsibilities the Aapda Mitra members have been assigned and assured that any assistance would be provided by the authorities when needed.
SP, Shri J. Jayapandiyan provided some informative insights regarding the District Disaster Management Plan while highlighting the difference between hazard and disaster especially focusing the disasters that the State is susceptible to. He broadly spoke on 3 phases of any disaster which are Preparedness, Response and Recovery respectively and appraised about various Disaster Risk Reduction Plan which are practiced globally.
Additionally, Shri Jayapandiyan also informed that a mock drill will be demonstrated in coming days wherein all the stakeholders can also participate. Lastly, he urged everyone present to acquaint themselves about the building construction guidelines approved by the Central Government against disastrous vulnerability.
An individual mock drill demonstration on rescue efforts to be carried out during any disaster was displayed by the teams of SDRF and Aapda Mitra.
Earlier, the welcome speech was addressed by ADM, Shri Dhiraj Subedi.
