Gangtok, May 18 (IPR): A three Mile-long Marathon was organized today by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department as part of the State Day Celebration.
A total number of 260 participants took part in the open category Marathon, which was flagged off by Special Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Sumita Pradhan, from MG Marg this morning and ended at Old Guards Ground, Tathangchen.
In the men’s category, Rinchen Lepcha finished the run and attained the first position with a timing of 12:05 minutes, while Som Bahadur Gurung completed the run in 12:29 minutes to secure the second position followed by Suraj Sharma who finished the marathon in 12:39 minutes, and Dhananjay Thakur took 12:56 minutes and accordingly stood on the second, third and fourth position respectively.
Likewise, the first to complete the marathon from the women’s category was Phurba Tamang who secured the first position with a timing of 15:49 minutes followed by Yudemit Lepcha with a timing of 17:18 minutes in the second position, Srijana Chettri was in the third position to complete the run in 17:32 minutes and Phur Diki Sherpa finished the run in 17:39 minutes and achieved the fourth position.
After the completion of the Marathon, the event witnessed the demonstration of a Traditional Archery match. A friendly match was held between two Archery clubs, Tathangchen VII and Denzong VII. Five participants represented each club, dressed in traditional attires and ready to shoot targets with locally crafted bows and arrows. The friendly match was won by Denzong VII.
Sikkim Olympic Association general secretary, Arjuna Awardee Shri Jaslal Pradhan graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, and Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Shri Raju Basnet, was the guest of Honour.
