The District Child Protection Unit West under Child Protection Scheme

Gyalshing, November 20 (IPR): The District Child Protection Unit West under Child Protection Scheme, Women & Child Development Department organised a workshop on Child Mental Health, Juvenile Justice Act 2015, Cyber Crime & Child Trafficking as a part of concluding programme on Child Rights Week under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav today at the Community Center, Gyalshing.

The week long celebration started on 14th November and it came to an end today. The main purpose of the celebration is to organize various outreach activities and campaigns across the country on Child Rights.

The programme was graced by Chairman SIDICO, Shri Janak Gurung as the Chief Guest and he was accompanied by Chairman NHPC, Shri Ram Kumar Chettri as a Special Guest.

Addressing the house, Shri Janak Gurung extended his best wishes to all the Child Care Institutes and NGOs of Sikkim. He also extended his appreciation to District Child Protection Unit West for organizing such an event. In addition, he stated that to generate awareness we should not only educate children but each and every individual should aware to uplift the society. He then assured to make visit in every Child Care Institutes and take neccessary steps in the days to come.

The first Resource Person of the event, Shri. Bikalp Chettri/Advocate spoke briefly on Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and its mandatory provisions. He highlighted some of the Amendments of Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and Protection of Children Act. Further, he highlighted some of the events occurred under POCSO Act. He then briefed the gathering about Mental Health Act 2017.

The second Resource Person from Police Department, SHO Gyalshing, Shri Silesh Tamang talked about Cyber Crime, its types and important provisions by citing various examples. He then talked about Child Trafficking where he highlighted some of the reported cases related to it in brief manner. Further, he informed that in Sikkim there are less child trafficking cases as compared to other. He further stressed on the importance of awareness amongst the masses. Furthermore, he suggested to do awareness programme in each and every schools to make more effective and wide awareness.

In conclusion, he requested all to feel free to file a complaint, not only in Police Station but there are number of platforms to report the cases, he added.

The third Resource Person Smt. Neelam Subba/Clinical Psychologist talked about Mental Health and its disorder in detail. She then requested the present gathering to report such kind of cases without hesitation. She also highlighted some cases which comes under POCSO Act and asked to report in time. She further requested to Councilors and ASHA workers to disseminate proper information regarding POCSO Act and punishment of various offences. In order to overcome such trauma, she delivered some points to deal with children facing abuses.

The event also witnessed a skit on Child Labour performed by Atish Dipankar Boys Home Chakhung followed by a felicitation programme and certificate & prize distribution to all the participants.

Earlier, DCPO West, Ms Bhawana Subba addressed the welcome note in the programme while CWC member, Shri Yogesh Nirola proposed a vote of thanks.

Gyalshing Nagar Panchayat President, Shri Devendra Prasad Sharma; CWC Chairperson, Shri Vivek Thapa; Assistant Director, BAC Gyalshing, Shri B.B. Thatal; District Youth Officer/NYK, Shri Dev Nepal, Councilors, ASHA Workers, Anganwadi Workers and students were in attendance in the programme.
