HCM inaugurates a multi-sport arena at Gangtok Municipal Corporation

Gangtok, Oct 27 (IPR): Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated a multi-sport arena built by the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) at the Gangtok Municipal Corporation Office Complex, today.

The function had the presence of Minister, Sports and Youth Affairs Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha, Minister Urban Development Department Shri Arun Upreti, MP (Lok Sabha) Shri Indra Hang Subba, MLA Shri Aditya Golay, MLA Shri Y.T. Lepcha, Secretary UDD Shri M.T. Sherpa, Heads of Departments, Mayor GMC Shri Nell Bahadur Chettri, Deputy Mayor Smt Tshering P. Bhutia, GMC Commissioner Shri H.K Chettri, Councillors of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, ex- councillors, dignitaries and invitees, and officers and staff from various other departments.

The function commenced with the formal inauguration of the Indoor Sports Arena by the Chief Guest. After inaugurating the Indoor Sports Arena, the Chief Minister inspected the various facilities under the sports arena.

The event at the Courtside Hall began with a welcome address delivered by the Municipal Commissioner Shri H.K. Chettri, followed by a technical report presented by Additional Chief Town Planner Shri. Gary Chopel.

Highlighting on the Blueprint of the Mega project, Shri. Chopel applauded the effort of all the in-house officials of GMC for completing the project within a stipulated time of 11 months. He added that the state’s first-of-its-kind indoor sports arena can be used for a variety of sporting events. The Arena has two wings, with one side opening into the main court area featuring three-storied multi-speciality games facility, the other opening leads to the other two halls, designed for indoor sport table tennis and a yoga room. The arena also has a multi fitness center with changing rooms and a Cafeteria. The third level of the building facilitates the Cricket batting area with an automated bowling machine.

During the programme, GMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor presented a memento to the Chief Minister, followed by felicitation accorded by the Football Clubs of Sikkim. The Chief Minister was also presented with a lifetime membership card and memento by Akraman FC.

Likewise, an Award of Commendation was handed to the project team and contractors by the Chief Guest.

Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang in his address congratulated UDD Minister, Department officials, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors and all staff members of GMC for timely completion of the Sports Arena. He asserted that the Government is doing its best to encourage sportsmanship culture in the State through various sporting facilities and infrastructure. He further said that the Government has given top priority to the development of the sports sector. He urged the people of Gangtok and surrounding areas to make the best use of the indoor sports arena.

The Chief Minister also spoke extensively about the initiatives taken by the Government in various other sectors like health, education and rural development.

UDD Minister Shri Arun Upreti congratulated the in-house officials of GMC, technical team, and all officials in charge for the successful completion of the mega project of GMC. He also took the opportunity to thank the Chief Minister for his leadership and for encouraging sports culture in the state.

Mayor GMC Shri N.B Chettri in his address thanked the Chief guest and dignitaries present in the programme for their presence and for making the event a success.

Thereafter, a friendly exhibition match was played between HCM 5 and GMC 5, and another match between Akraman FC and Academy Knight.

Giving the programme its closure, a vote of thanks was proposed by Bazar Officer Shri Ram Tamang.
