A National Conference on NEP 2020


Gangtok, Oct 24 (IPR): A National Conference on NEP 2020 (National Education Policy) under the topic ‘NEP 2020: Towards India-Centred Holistic Inclusive Quality School Education’ was held in the capital today. The event was graced by Union Minister of State for Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, Dr. Subhas Sarkar as the chief guest. The conference had the distinguished presence of the Education Minister, Government of Sikkim, Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha, along with eminent educationists from different parts of the country. The National Conference was also attended by School Heads and senior officers of the Education Department.

The National Conference was organized by the Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education (BOSSE). The event also marked the First Foundation Day of BOSSE, which was established on the 8th of October, 2020, barely two months after the formal announcement of the National Education Policy.

The Minister of State for Education, GoI, Dr. Subhas Sarkar in his inaugural address spoke extensively about the NEP 2020 as a transformative Policy envisioned to build a robust nation. The Minister while deliberating on the topic invited feedback from the educationists in the audience and welcomed their perspective. The Minister congratulated BOSSE for organizing this National Conference on the important topic and for completing one year of establishment.

Minister, Education Department, Government of Sikkim, Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha, in his address thanked the Union Minister for his visit to Sikkim and for his deliberation on the National Education Policy 2020. He said that NEP is forward looking and all-encompassing. The Minister said that Sikkim is a small state but its contribution in the field of education is noteworthy. He highlighted some of the initiatives taken by the State Government which found place in the National Education Policy 2020. He also highlighted the innovative methods adopted by the Education Department to impart school education during the pandemic.

Additional Chief Secretary, Education Department, Shri G.P. Upadhyaya said that Sikkim was one of the first States to implement the NEP 2020. The ACS also read out the message of the Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu on the occasion of the First Foundation Day of BOSSE.

Chairman, NIOS, Government of India, Prof. Saroj Sharma in her address highlighted some of the aspects of NEP 2020 such as emphasis on skill development, self-sustainability, integration of ancient and modern education, and focus on sustainable development. He congratulated the BOSSE for completing one year of its establishment, and assured continued support in future.

Special Secretary, Education Department, cum Director, Elementary Education and SPD, Samagra Shiksha, Government of Sikkim, Shri Bhim Thatal made a presentation on the unique methods adopted for KG Classes and primary school during the pandemic.

Earlier, Vice Chairperson, BOSSE, Sikkim, Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal in his welcome address shared the vision of BOSSE. He profusely thanked the Union Minister for his presence and participation in the National Conference. He also thanked the Government of Sikkim for its constant support.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Chairman, BOSSE, Shri Hemant Goyal.

The inaugural session was followed by the technical session which consisted of a panel discussion on the topic ‘NEP 2020 and School Education’. The session was chaired by Director, Secondary Education, Government of Sikkim, Ms Hondala Gyaltsen. The Speakers for the panel discussion comprised of Vice Chairperson, BOSSE who deliberated on the topic ‘Philosophy and Spirit of NEP 2020; Prof. C.K. Saluja (retd.), Department of Education, Delhi University, who spoke on the topic ‘India-Centred School Education’; Prof. M.C. Sharma (retd.), School of Education, IGNOU ad Member, AAC, BOSSE who spoke on the topic ‘Inclusion through ODL’; and Prof. M.K. Das (retd.), Department of Education, Kashi Vidyapeeth and Member AAC, BOSSE who deliberated on the topic ‘Teacher Preparation for Quality School Education’.

This was followed by a panel discussion on ‘NEP 2020 and School Education Boards’. The session was chaired by Chairperson, NIOS, Government of India, Prof. Saroj Sharma, and had the Chairmen of Maharashtra Board, MP Board, Madhya Pradesh Open School, and Mizoram Board as speakers.
