Union MoS for Education interacts with the students of Sikkim University


Gangtok, 23rd October 2021: Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Education who is on a tour to Sikkim interacted with the students, faculty members and officers of Sikkim University in a programme organized at the Lemon Tree Hotel, Gangtok on 23rd October 2021. The Vice- Chancellor Prof. Avinash Khare welcomed the Hon’ble Minister and thanked him for his visit inspite of the inclement weather conditions. Prof. Khare also gave a brief introduction of the University where he mentioned about the milestones achieved by the University. One such milestone being the establishment of post graduate departments in Lepcha, Bhutia and Limbu languages, which are not only listed as endangered languages by the UNESCO, but are also recognized as the tribal and indigenous languages of Sikkim, Darjeeling and Nepal Himalayas. With this, the University acquires the rare distinction of being the only University in the entire world where these languages are taught at the postgraduate level. He also informed that Sikkim University has initiated an experiment on Saffron farming.

Sh. G.P. Upadhyaya Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of Sikkim also welcomed the Hon’ble Minister. Shri Upadhyaya mentioned that as per AISHE survey the State of Sikkim stands at 1st position with Gross Enrolment Ratio of 75.8%.
Hon’ble, MoS for Education Dr. Subhas Sarkar interacted with the students, faculty members and officers of the University and encouraged them to share their experiences.
In his address Hon’ble MoS for Education Dr. Subhas Sarkar shared his experiences as a student. He was of the strong opinion that dedicated work and fulfilling duties responsibly will help one achieve everything. Hon’ble Minister assured of all possible help to Sikkim University for campus construction. He was of the opinion that with one of the best work ethics of the employees, a disciplined student community and excellent support of the people, the University will be able to achieve many a milestones and establish itself as an institute of national repute.
A presentation on the New Education Policy was delivered by Dr. Yodida Bhutia, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Education, Sikkim University. In her presentation, Dr. Bhutia mentioned that in total compliance with the directions of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, Sikkim University has initiated the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020.It has constituted an empowered committee viz., National Educational Policy Implementation Committee of Sikkim University (NEPCSU) for fast and effective enactment. University has also tied up with the Centre for Education and Social Studies (CESS), Bangalore – an organization that played an active role in NEP-2020 drafting for hand-holding. The University had several meetings with members of the committee and the College principals to work on implementation of policy. In order to implement multiple entry and multiple exits, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses, adoption of SWAYAM courses, adoption of apprenticeship/internship degree, adoption of learning outcome-based curriculum framework various committees have been formulated for PG and UG level and preliminary preparation has begun.
A presentation on the upcoming campus of the University at Yangang was delivered by Sh. C.B. Chhetri, Deputy Registrar and Internal Audit Officer, Sikkim University.
Registrar Sh. K.V.S. Kameswara Rao delivered the vote of thanks at the end of the programme and thanked all the dignitaries and guests for their time and presence.(PIB)
