Mangan, 13 Sept (IPR): North district of the State has been witnessing incessant rainfall since Sunday and due to heavy showers, widespread damages have been caused in the district. There have been reports of multiple landslides at Dzongu, Mangan, Lachen, Mangshilla and other areas.
The District headquarters of Mangan has been cut off from Gangtok due to the landslide at Ambithang. The Ambithang Jhora is flowing in full spate and the culverts have been damaged.
The road between Mangan to Chungthang has been cut off after the bridge was washed off at Rafong Khola. There are many damages along the Mangan-Chungthang road and the recently inaugurated Bailey Bridge near Toong has also been damaged.
The road network in Dzongu has been damaged at multiple places with major landslides. The entire areas of Upper Dzongu have been cut off due to landslides near Mantam Lake .
Rain and widespread landslides have affected about 50 houses and few houses have been severely damaged in the district. The situation of the houses near Rafong Jhora is very grim as the landslips in the areas have become active. The residents of the houses which are in danger have been directed to shift to safer location.
District Collector, Shri Karma R. Bonpo, along with Sub Divisional Magistrates of Mangan and Dzongu Subdivision , DPO (DDMA) and Police personnel along with Chairman, SNT, Shri Pintso Namgyal, did a survey of the affected areas at Mangan, Mangshilla and Dzongu today to assess the situation and is constantly keeping a strict vigil . Tarpaulins have been provided to cover the slip areas and residents have been asked to vacate to safer location.
The District Administration is continuously monitoring the situation to provide relief and rescue measures. The schools in North district have been directed to be shut tomorrow to ensure safety of the students.
The administration is also coordinating with the Power Projects and monitoring the situation round the clock. The Border Roads Organization is working on restoration of the road network in the district. Relief and ex-gratia as per norms will be released to the affected people.
