A vaccine drive for the Special School for Children with Disabilities


Gangtok, June 24 (IPR): A special vaccine drive for children of the Special School for Children with Disabilities was organised at the Special School, Syari today. The programme was organised by the Social Justice & Welfare Department in coordination with the Department of Health & Family Welfare.

Hon’ble Minister for Social Justice & Welfare Department, Dr. M. K. Sharma graced the occasion. On the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister addressed a press conference.

The Hon’ble Minister while addressing the press conference said that amidst the pandemic, the work that is being done by the State Government for the Sikkimese populace should also be extended to the people who need special support and care from the society, especially persons with disabilities, on priority. He said that this special vaccination drive was organized with this objective. Therefore, the State Government extends a special package along with a special vaccination drive for them today, he added.

The Hon’ble Minister mentioned that since accessing vaccination website for persons with disabilities is challenging, hence the State Government is conducting this special vaccine drive, at the school, today.

The Hon’ble Minister announced that the State Government has decided to add Rs.1700 per month to the existing Rs. 300 per month pension provided by Government of India under Indira Gandhi Disability National Pension Scheme, for all the persons with disabilities regardless of their percentage of disability and age. The package has an inclusion of all the persons with disabilities, irrespective of the category they fall under.

He also informed that the State Government has deemed it expedient to re-name the existing Subsistence Allowance to Chief Minister’s State Disability Pension Scheme (CMSDPS).
The Hon’ble Minister also announced that the State Government has decided to provide Conveyance Allowance for differently abled persons (persons with disabilities), who serve the government under temporary employment basis. He further added that this initiative is an extension of appreciation for those contributing to the government despite of their disabilities.

The Hon’ble Minister also announced that the Government has decided to adopt the Spastic Society School under the aegis of Social Justice & Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim. The teachers and support staff of the School will be employed under Social Justice & Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, for permanent and sustainable support, of the school, the children and the faculty.

The Hon’ble Minister extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister for his thoughtful approach towards the persons with disabilities and for his prompt action to address their issues.

The Hon’ble Minister concluded his address by mentioning that this initiative is only a support extended from the government with the hope to provide help to make the lives of persons with disabilities- a little easier, a little braver and a little smoother. He further added that the true success of normalcy for persons with disabilities will be at its best, if the general populace thinks of it as a duty to extend their support and care within their capability, to provide them a life of hope and dignity.

The Hon’ble Minister was joined in the programme by Secretary, Social Justice & Welfare Department, Shri Tshewang Gyachho, State Immunization Offier, Dr. Phumzay Denzongpa, officers of SJ&WD, and Members of Social Organizations working in the field of disabilities.
