
Gangtok, April 15: The third anniversary of Ayushman Bharat – Health and Wellness Day was observed at the auditorium of STNM Hospital, Sochyagang on 14th April. The programme was graced by the Hon’ble Advisor, Health and Family Welfare Department Shri. K.B. Gurung as the Chief Guest in the presence of Principal Director Health Services I, Dr Tsering Laden and PDHS cum Mission Director NHM, Dr T. Yamphel Bhutia. The Chief Medical Officers with representatives from the districts, Primary Healthcare teams from the PHC-HWC and SHC-HWC, Programme officers from the Headquarters, IEC Team and other staff of the department attended the programme. The Additional Medical Superintendent, STNMH, Dr Yudok Bhutia and Principal, Sikkim Government College of Nursing, Ms. Chunni Bhutia were also present.
Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres(AB-HWC) provides comprehensive primary health care. It is the country’s flagship programme and a national initiative for a healthy India or Ayushman Bharat. In this initiative, all the sub-health centres and the primary health centres in the rural and the urban will be upgraded to Health and Wellness Centres.
In Sikkim, the programme has been implemented and all the sub-centres have been provided with one additional manpower, a Mid Level Health Provider.
During the programme “Individual and Team Certificates of Recognition” were distributed for exemplary contribution in strengthening the delivery of comprehensive primary health care services through AB-HWCs, “Kayakalp award” to the best performing District Hospital, CHC and PHCs and “Certificate of Appreciation” for quiz competition under NTEP.

Apart from the award, a special Certificate of Appreciation was also awarded to Shri Bikash Thapa, Chairman, Stars of Hope who was one of the first volunteers to render his support to the department in our fight against COVID-19.
In the meeting, ADHS CPHC Dr Raj Prabha Moktan gave a brief presentation on the status of AB- Health and Wellness Centre and its importance in the Sikkim while
ADHS Quality Assurance Dr.Baroon Subba outlined the Kayakalp programme in the state and how it strengthens and improves the quality of the health system.
PDHS cum MD NHM in his address emphasized the importance of primary health care and how preventive measures were very important especially in times of COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted that Sikkim has achieved the distinction of posting 100% MLHPs(Mid Level Health Provider) in the country. This would help in reducing the burden of Non-communicable and Communicable diseases in the rural areas and further strengthen our ability to fight the present pandemic at the community level.
The Chief Guest, Advisor Shri K.B.Gurung advised on providing quality health care to people of Sikkim especially at the primary health care level reducing the caseloads at the secondary and tertiary levels. He commended the good work done by the department.
